Training Program

The ABCD training program runs for two days. Once trained, facilitators are provided with the Facilitator Manual (in CD-ROM format) and are given access to a members only login section of the ABCD website that includes additional resources.

The workshop includes a comprehensive introduction to the ABCD program, materials and theoretical basis. Participants learn how to use the Facilitator Manual, and have the opportunity to practise delivering aspects of the program.

The workshop introduces participants to the program through a range of presentation techniques including:

  • problem-solving exercises
  • DVD and live demonstrations
  • group discussion
  • small group exercises
  • practice exercises.  

The Facilitator Manual includes:

  • program guide
  • comprehensive facilitator notes
  • in-session guides for facilitators
  • handouts for parents
  • PowerPoint presentations (slides).

The resources for parents are available in English as well as in translation in the following languages: Arabic, Macedonian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Practitioners who have completed the ABCD program can help parents discuss and practise a range of strategies and ideas including:

  • understanding adolescents
  • connecting and communicating with teenagers
  • negotiating boundaries
  • solving problems so that everybody wins
  • setting effective limits dealing with risky behaviour
  • getting support.
